Oh. God.
I can think of no single element of my childhood that has become more corrupted than my obsession with Weezer. When I found out the Tooth Fairy wasn’t real, I didn’t come out of my room for a week. So you can imagine how I felt when Weezer dropped Make Believe in my lap. I cried myself to sleep every time a new single was released.
And now we’ve got the new Weezer album, 8 tracks of which leaked just a few days ago (I won’t link you here, but if you know how to operate the Google, I think you can find it). Let’s with the new single, “Port & Beans.” First reactions: need we add insult to injury? I mean, after you leave a big giant turd on your entire back catalog with “Beverly Hills.” And quite frankly, I’m tired of songs masquerading as “Weezer songs.”
But then I actually listened to the song. To my surprise, I like it, quite a bit actually. The element of Weezer-quirkiness that was completely missing in the last album (and most of Maladroit) is back, at least to an extent. The song starts with an El Scorchio style acoustic guitar part, and continues with Rivers singing some moderate-to-poor lyrics: “They say I need some Rogaine to put in my hair… etc.” The chorus kicks in with classic Weezer over-the-top heavy metal guitars (hello KISS!), and more mediocre lyrics: “I don’t give a hoot about what you think!” That being said, the lyrics are, for the most part, a deviation from previous numbers like, say, “Beverly Hills.” It appears Rivers has moved from singing about not being cool (Blue and Pinkerton), to singing about not caring that you think he’s not cool… or something.
