The Daily Dic: Twin Tigers - “Red Fox Run”

Twin Tigers have been hunting me down, and I think they finally caught me. I saw their name mentioned somewhere on Yellow Stereo a couple of weeks ago, which I didn’t read. Then I saw an NPR Second Stage podcast featuring the band, which I deleted. And then just a couple of days ago, a friend of mine actually mentioned them to me. Whoever’s running their PR is doing a damn fine job of freaking me the hell out.
This song, “Red Fox Run”, is taken from Twin Tiger’s debut EP Curious Faces / Violet Future, which was released not too long ago by the band in good old Athens, GA (former home of our own Mark Topel. Go Bulldogs?). The track relies heavily on guitars, forming a rough, edgy backbone for the rest of the song. The vocals are mixed low and almost indistinguishable from the rest of the noise, like a My Bloody Valentine record; only when the music relents (which is rarely) or when backup vocals are added do the vocals get a chance to shine.
The dark brooding guitar riff that drives the verses crescendos into a dirtier, feedback-prone tone on the choruses. While the band makes that raw sound look good, there are times that the guitars, echoing and feeding back, seem at least excessive (”masturbatory,” we call it in the business). Nonetheless, Twin Tigers are worth a serious listen. Grab the track after the jump.
