The Daily Dic: The Submarines - “You Me and the Bourgeoisie”

I’ve heard about the Submarines from a number of different places, including their appearance on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic in May, and I figured it was about time to “officially” check them out (I’d been reluctant, being as how their name reminds me of ‘The Subways,’ a band I associate with a summer of broken AC in my car, and not very good music). Anyway, I can officially report that it’s a good thing I did.

Their music has the same strategic placement of parts you’d find with pop music - the distortion on the piano is too perfect, the handclaps too consistent - but there’s something about the whole mix that still seems very lively and organic. My money’s on that something being the gorgeous female vocals throughout.

Submarines are John Dragonetti (Jack Drag) & Blake Hazard, a married couple from LA, which are giving Mates of State a run for their money as Best Married Couple In Pop (full list forthcoming). If I’d been smart, I would have caught them at SXSW. Of course, I wasn’t, and I didn’t. But you can catch ‘em after the jump, with “You Me and the Bourgeoisie” off Honeysuckle Weeks.
