We all love The Office. Over the last three years, it has proven to be one of the best and most consistent sitcoms on television. However, there have been some serious flaws in plot elements that, to the dismay of violently disgruntled fans, have never been addressed by the writers, the most notable of these blemishes being the tedious and uninteresting love triangle between Jim (John Krasinksi), Pam (Jenna Fischer), and Roy (David Denman).

Really, I think we had enough after the brief first season, but this lazy and unimaginative crutch allowed the writers to limp through the second and third seasons, completely ignoring the more interesting romance that had begun midway through the second season. No, not Dwight and Angela. That’s right, the forbidden romance between Phyllis Lapin and Bob Vance (Vance Refrigeration), played by Phyllis Smith and Robert Shafer, respectively.

I think by this point we all know the facts: NBC is hooking up its hit sitcom The Office with its own spin-off, which has neither a title, a premise, or a main character. There’s rumor that the spin-off will feature an entirely new cast, but let’s face it, that’s boring. Here at Big Diction, we’re convinced the spin-off will center around one of the minor characters from The Office. In fact we have an office pool going, and we’re each writing about our favorites. The buy-in is 25 cents, so there’s kinda a lot riding on this.

I call Kelly Kapoor. Since the second season, she been by far the most “real” character. My definition of real, of course, is based entirely on the network television definition of real: REALITY TV.

NBC is giving their most popular sitcom, The Office, a spin-off next February. Let’s go over the facts. Oh wait, I just did. That’s all of them. There’s literally nothing known about the show, including the title (although The Office Spin-Off has nice ring to it). While the premise of the show is something we at Big Diction are clamoring for, what we really want to know is which character will be leaving the Scranton branch to become the lead on the new program.

As Adam said, none of the main characters could possibly leave without destroying the dynamic of the show. And most of the supporting characters are rather one-dimensional, good for a few jokes based on the little information we know about each character (“Creed’s crazy, let’s have him say something that makes no sense.” “Meredith is an alcoholic; let’s have her mention how much she loves alcohol.”). When thinking about the possible characters that could leave the show and carry their own sitcom, there was really only one answer: Darryl Philbin, played by Craig Robinson. [Read more]

Can you feel it? It’s that wonderful, special time of year when television studios announce their renewals, drops and future plans. Fantastic for some, fatal for others. NBC recently announced its own plans, stating that 30 Rock, The Office, and (to many people’s surprise) Friday Night Lights were among the survivors. And while Scrubs was dropped (do you really even care anymore?) a nice little addition was made. A spin-off to The Office will be one of the network’s new shows, scheduled to debut after the 2009 Super Bowl and air after The Office during the regular line up. NBC has been very hush-hush about all this, revealing only the shows existence and little else. This opens the door for everyone’s favorite pastime: speculation.
