The Daily Dic: Sunny Day Sets Fire - “Brainless”

By John Michael Cassetta • Jun 2nd, 2008 • Category: Music, The Daily Dic

Relax, it’s not Emo music. I know the name Sunny Day Sets Fire has a bit of a cheeseball-sentimentality ring to it, but trust me on this one, it’s good. My friend John Laird (over at Side One Track One) mentioned these guys while he was guesting on KOOP’s Ear Candy the other day. I’d seen the name floating around, but I always had the same misconceptions about their music based entirely on their name. Good thing old John cleared things up.

Sunny Day Sets Fire (let’s call them SDSF) are, from what I can tell, a collection of musicians from multiple countries, loosely based in London. Their music is, at least on the surface, light-hearted; shimmering acoustic guitars line the walls of this song “Brainless”, and the vocals come through in double-decker harmonies. Is that Tommy playing the Euphonium in the background? Only briefly in the bridge do the band depart from the otherwise joyous sounds of Summer parading through your computer speakers.

Their new album, Summer Palace, should be part of your summer checklist, right after sunscreen and before a gallon-and-a-half of Early Times. It isn’t physically available until July 8th, but you can download it from iTunes right now.

Get you mp3 on after the jump.
