Fallon Shmallon

True story: a few days ago, I thought, “Hmm, you know who has seemingly dropped off the radar? That Jimmy Fallon guy. Thank God, he sure was annoying!.” Cut to a few days later, and Jimmy Fallon is now replacing Conan O’Brien in February 2009. The guy went from being nowhere to being in my face every single weeknight in no time at all!

TV News: Finally That Show About Me Got Picked Up

By Sam Wunderl • Apr 24th, 2008 • Category: Television, Televsion & Film

Alternate Title: I didn’t know we’d be getting a Friday Night Lights spin-off about Tim Riggins so soon

Sue Naegle, new president of HBO, has picked up her first show. It’s called Hung. Here’s a synopsis from Variety:

Hung opens on a man who was once a high school sports legend, but is now plodding along in middle age as a struggling father and high school basketball coach. His luck begins to change, however, when he figures out a way to use his best asset.

They’re referring to his penis.

The show is created by Colette Burson and Dmitry Lipkin, creator of FX’s The Riches. Hopefully this show, along with Alan Ball’s vampire series True Blood, will reinvigorate HBO’s schedule, which has been sagging after the finales of two of their best known series (The Sopranos and The Wire) and a string of misses (John From Cincinnati, Tell Me You Love Me).

Music News: Possibility of Replacements Reunion Causes Nationwide Boners

By Sam Wunderl • Apr 22nd, 2008 • Category: Music, News

Yes, the rumors are true. Well, the rumors aren’t true as much as that it’s true that there are rumors. The Replacements, after 17 long years of not being a band anymore, might reunite and be a band again. According to Tommy Stinson, bassist for the beloved punk group, the band had received “lucrative offers to perform at Coachella and other major festivals,” and that he and Paul Westerberg, lead singer and songwriter, were close to accepting.

From Billboard:

“We actually talked about it again this year, and I think there was a con-sensus that, you know, maybe it wasn’t the right time (to reunite), or maybe it is the right time,” Stinson says. “Paul and I were kind of in cahoots talking to them [and] talking to (his manager) Darren (Hill). There were some things thrown out, and there were other festivals that wanted it too, if we were going to do it.

This news comes on the eve of the first wave of Rhino’s reissuing of the Replacements’ catalog. The band’s output from Twin/Tone records, including their magnum opus, Let It Be, is released tomorrow, April 22nd.

Movies: Journey to the Center of the Earth 3-D Looks Slightly Fun in Three Dimensions, Really Lame in Just Two

By Sam Wunderl • Apr 16th, 2008 • Category: Film, Televsion & Film

I once heard that Brendan Fraser chooses roles not based on what they would do for his career, but whether or not they’d be “fun.” Considering his filmography (The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, Looney Tunes: Back In Action), what he considers fun involves running from/talking to things that will be added in digitally in post-production. In Journey To The Center of the Earth 3-D, he’ll be stretching his acting chops just a bit by running from CGI creatures and then out of the screen towards us…‘cause the movie’s in 3-D. I don’t know if you knew this, but you can view it in three dimensions.

Television: Big Diction Office Spin-Off Predictions, Pt. 2

By Sam Wunderl • Apr 13th, 2008 • Category: Television, Televsion & Film, Uncategorized

Darryl Philbin

There’s been a lot of talk about the new spin-off of The Office lately, so over the next few weeks at Big Diction, we’ll all be picking our favorite Office spin-off stars, and speculating on the show that might develop around them. Now, Sam Wunderl on Craig Robinson.

NBC is giving their most popular sitcom, The Office, a spin-off next February. Let’s go over the facts. Oh wait, I just did. That’s all of them. There’s literally nothing known about the show, including the title (although The Office Spin-Off has nice ring to it). While the premise of the show is something we at Big Diction are clamoring for, what we really want to know is which character will be leaving the Scranton branch to become the lead on the new program.

As Adam said, none of the main characters could possibly leave without destroying the dynamic of the show. And most of the supporting characters are rather one-dimensional, good for a few jokes based on the little information we know about each character (“Creed’s crazy, let’s have him say something that makes no sense.” “Meredith is an alcoholic; let’s have her mention how much she loves alcohol.”). When thinking about the possible characters that could leave the show and carry their own sitcom, there was really only one answer: Darryl Philbin, played by Craig Robinson. [Read more]
