Nagisa Ni Te (aka: ‘On The Beach’), my go-to duo for Japanese psych-folk music, will releasing their latest album, Yosuga, here in the states on Jagjaguwar. The album is the follow up to 2005’s Dream Sounds and the seventh total for the band. As Dream Sounds was less Album and more EP, given that none of the songs were actual “new” releases, this album marks the first true LP from the band since Jagjaguwar released The Same As A Flower to the states in 2004.
I’m not sure why, but we’ve been featuring a lot of “couples” bands lately, with Mates of State and more recently the Submarines. Perhaps love is in the air. Either way, chalk up another one, because Shinji Shibayama (formerly of Idiot O’Clock and Hallelujahs) along with his girlfriend Masako Takeda, make up Nagisa Ni Te. Shinji Shibayama also runs the Japanese label Org Records, which has released Nagisa Ni Te records in Japan.
As for the music, “Premonition,” taken from the new album, has a simple beauty to it, interweaving the serene male and female vocals set to an organ and drums. What extra instrumentation the band affords the song comes mostly in sparse guitar solos, which fit perfectly in this calm and drifting tune. Throw some headphones on and have a listen.
