There’s something cathartic about this new track from The Lord Dog Bird, the side-project of Colin McCann (guitarist for Baltimore’s Wilderness), which may or may not have to do with the low-fi recording ethic. Either way, it’s got me extremely excited about his self-titled release, coming up in August on Jagjaguwar.
Now, it might be because I’ve listened to the new Shearwater album about 100 times now, but this song reminds me a lot of a rawer, less delicate version of certain songs on Rook. The instrumentation is heavily rhythmic, guided by simple drum beats, filling the song with a sort of movement and energy that’s much greater than its slow tempo would suggest. McCann’s vocals fill the mix, echoing from both left and right channels rather than the usual middle pocket, giving them an unrealistic, epic quality, which is again drenched in the warm rawness of a four-track recorder. The lyrics (or at least the ones I can make out) mimic what the song itself is seemingly trying to do: “The gift of song comes bringing us all peace,” sings an exposed McCann after the music has faded into the background.
As I said, I can’t wait to hear the rest of this album, so expect a full review soon enough. For now, we’ll both have to deal with just this one track, “The Gift Of Song In The Lion’s Den.”
