The Daily Dic: David Vandervelde - “I Will Be Fine”
By John Michael Cassetta • Jun 9th, 2008 • Category: Music, The Daily Dic

One of the few labels I still trust as a “go-to” for good music is the Jagjaguwar/Secretly Canadian/Dead Oceans conglomerate. Aside from that, I find that what label a band is on hardly tells you much about the band, no less about how good they might sound (aside from “specialty” labels, like DFA for example). It’s no surprise then, that David Vandervelde’s sophomore album, Waiting For The Sunrise, is due this August on Secretly Canadian.

Having only heard this song, I can’t report on the album as a whole, but if it’s anything like “I Will Be Fine,” it’s at least a marginal departure from last year’s The Moonstation House Band. The instrumentation is warm and spacious, still drawing from the obvious 70’s pop influences, but with less of the crunch, and more of the smooth, mellow side. Says the label:

After relocating from Chicago to Brooklyn, Vandervelde struggled to find his place in the new musical community. This seclusion led to most of the album being composed in his apartment on an acoustic guitar.

It’s not hard to imagine the song coming from a lonely apartment, if of course it’s well stocked with organs, pianos, guitars, and a lot of effect processors. What yours isn’t?

I’m excited to hear the rest of the album, but for now, we’ll all have to sit tight with this clip, which you can find just after the jump.
