The Daily Dic: Florence and the Machine - “Kiss with a Fist”
By John Michael Cassetta • Jun 5th, 2008 • Category: Music, The Daily Dic

I caught a few songs from Florence and the Machine’s set here at SXSW back in March, and while she was an artist I had always meant to check out, I never quite got around to it until now. She comes to us from England, the same label that brought us Sunny Day Sets Fire, I Am Sound Records. Their 7″ debut single, featuring this song, “Kiss with a Fist,” is out June 9th in the USA.

Florence is a bit angsty, and from what I can tell, totally down with domestic violence. The song and the video feature her twisting pop music into something a tad bit harder and raunchier. She’s part Feist, part Marylin Monroe, part Betsy Johnson and part Punk Rock. Oh, and apparently part Hitler. From her own description:

She also has almost as much stage presence as Hitler. She’s like a funny sexy popstar Hitler without the despotism and with more beautiful songs and the utmost love and respect for Jews and gays and gypsies.

Well, if that isn’t a off-color analogy, I don’t know what is. I mean, I suppose I’m not personally offended by it. But I could think of 6 million people or so who might be. It’s all in good fun though, the analogy I mean. Watch the video for yourself after the jump.
