There were quite a few good releases today between Centro-matic, Shearwater and of course the new Weezer, which I picked up at Best Buy for 6 bucks. I figured, as long as I’m going to be buying something from Weezer, I may as well buy it at Best Buy for a ridiculously low price. It’s appropriate, the price tag, given that a little less than half the album is good…
But something you may have missed amid all the big name releases is an album from a Brooklyn outfit called The Gang. Their debut, Zero Hits, came out today on Absolutely Kosher.
Their sound is tough to classify. The album is covered in effects, but not in the usual “covered in effects” way; over-the-top reverb and distorted vocals are mixed right along side clean guitars, and it’s sometimes hard to tell which instrument is which - did that synthesizer just become a bass? I think it did! For all these oddities though, at the core the album is good, solid songwriting. Have a taste with “Sea So,” track 4 on Zero Hits, which I hear is in stores, or online, or something.
